Indo Dutch
Silver
Indo Dutch, Silver ½ Rupee, 5.63g, Jagannathpur, 28 RY (1790/91 AD), struck posthumously INO Alamgir II (1754-1759 AD), at Jagannathpur (Jaggernaikpuram). Coins of Jaggernaikpuram are very rare & above half rupee is of the highest rarity. In order to cater for trade arriving in at the Machhlipatnam port. Dutch East India Company VOC opened a mint in the coastal town of Jagannathpur or 'Jaggernaikapuram', near Machhlipatnam. A detailed survey of coins struck at Jagannathpur is done by Jan Lingen in his article “Jagannathpur: a mint town of the Dutch East India Company”, in Numismatic Digest, vol. 23-24 (1999-2000). Rupees are known, dated AH 1179 (sold in Classical Numismatic Gallery AUC 15, lot No 376) and AH 1184 by Lingen as mentioned in digest, the above offered coin is only 1 known till now, which makes this ½ rupee not only unlisted by Lingen but also probably the only known fractional coin for the Jagannathpur coinage. About Extremely Fine, Extremely Rare.
