George VI, Copper-Nickel, 1 Anna, 1939, Bombay Mint, Head Type II, Dot, Mule. F. Prid Unlisted. GK 1380. Very Fine. Very Rare. The Bombay and Calcutta Mints in 1938-39 used the 1st or Young Head with long trefoils on the obverse for their Anna coins. This changed in 1940 when the 2nd or mature head with short trefoils replaced the 1st or Young Head in the obverse dies. However, on some occasions, probably towards the end of 1939 when the standard dies broke or replacements were late in arriving, the mature head dies meant for the next year, which had already arrived, were employed, as in the present coin. |
