Ref: RIC I² Gaius/Caligula 35. (Caligula, youngest son of Germanicus and Agrippina, was born A.D.12, and was brought up among the legions in Germany. His real name, was Caius Caesar, and he was always called Caius by his contemporaries : Caligula was a surname given him by soldiers from his wearing in his boyhood small caligea, or soldiers boots.)
