Central Bank of India was the first Indian commercial bank which was wholly owned and managed by Indians. Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala, the founder of the bank, a twenty eight year old assistant accountant at Bank of India was told by his Manager, an Englishman that “No Indian is competent to manage a bank”. Soon after Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala told his Manager “Sir, I have made up my mind. I resign from the Bank’s service. One day my bank will be bigger than yours”. Within that year Sir Sorabji Pochkhanawala established Central Bank of India in December 1911.
