In Travancore of the 19th century, the two coins most popular in daily use, were the cash and chuckram. A Chuckram was worth was worth 16 copper cash and 28 1/2 chukrams were reckoned to be equal to one british rupee. Chuckrams being small and globose were exceedingly difficult to count or handle, hence they were measured or counted by means of these types of above chuckram boards, a small plate in wood with holes, the exact size and depth of a chuckram, drilled in regular rows on its surface, a small handful of coins is thrown on the board, and it is then shaken gently from side to side, so as to cause a single chuckram to fall into each cavity, and the surplus , if any is swept off with hand, A glance at the board when filled, shows that it contains the exact number of coins for which it is intended.
