AUC18
Hindu Coins of Medieval India
Copper
Rajputana / North-East Gujarat region, Anonymous Copper, 1.820g,12-11mm, Obv: Animal to right, Rev: Samvat 1653, probably issued by one of the semi-independent Rajput dynasties of c. 15th-16th century. These coins do not bear any name of the issuer but only have a Devanagari legend which mentions the year of issue, prefixed with the word ‘Samvat’. Most likely the issuer chose to remain anonymous because he was a vassal of the Mughals or one of the preceding Sultanate dynasties. VS1653 would mean the coin is struck in the final years of Emperor Akbar, at a time when the Ranas of Chitor had not yet been fully subdued. Very Fine, Rare.
