Assam, Octagonal Silver Rupee, 11.04g, Rudra Simha (1696-1714), Sk. 1619, Assamese legends in four lines, Obv: Sri Sri Hara/ Gauri Padayu/gala Kamala/ Madhukara, Rev: Sri Srimat/ Saumaresvara/ Deva Rudra Simha/sya Sake 1619, lion chasing deer below towards right. Reverse die perfectly struck at 6 o'clock. (A.Mitra. 33, RB. F7.1). Very Fine+, Extremely Rare.
This is a very rare issue that has a special legend describing the king as the Lord of Saumara. Saumara was the name of the easternmost division of Kamarupa, i.e. upper Assam. The motif of a lion chasing a deer is also not found on any other issue of this ruler. This may well have been the issue prepared for the king's coronation ceremony.
