Victoria, White Metal 13.92g, Commemorative Medallion - The Great Exhibition, 1851 - By Allen & Moore of Birmingham, 1851 (39mm diam, struck to commemorate the building of the Crystal Palace, to host the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Crystal Palace was a cast-iron and plate-glass structure built in Hyde Park, London. The structure housed the Great Exhibition of 1851. The exhibition showcased over 14,000 exhibitors from around the world, displaying examples of technology developed during in the Industrial Revolution. The exhibition, and the building which housed it, were a symbol of immense national pride for Victorian Britain. As such, multiple souvenirs were created to mark the achievement, among which is this medallion, cast by Allen & Moore of Birmingham in 1851.The obverse side of the medal features an image of the Crystal Palace. In exergue are depicted the heads of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, within an oval frame, topped with a crown. The frame is flanked by two cherubs. The obverse also bears the name of the Crystal Palace's architect: "J. Paxton Esq." and the legend: "THE BUILDING AT LONDON FOR THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION 1851" Toned Uncirculated, Scarce.
