This is the second series of commemorative coins which was issued for a successful raid over the Bengal Muslim territory by the King Vijay Manikya. This coin refers to his holy bath in the “Lakhi” or “Lakshya” river which is a branch of Brahmaputra that passes close to Sonargaon. In the reverse there are two epithets for the king viz... “Lashyasnayi (i.e. bather in the Lakshya) and “Tripura-Mahesh” (i.e. The lord of Tripura), with the name of queen Lakshmi. And on the reverse instead of traditional ‘Tripura Lion’ this coin depicted the composite “Ardhanarisvara”. One half is the Durga seated on her lion, and the other half is the Shiva seated on his humped bull. The male Shiva half has two hand and stands on the Bull or Virsha, while the female half depicted with five hands stands on the simha or lion. Such as ingenious concept was unknown in the history of Indian iconography. This representation of Siva-Durga form of Ardhanarisvara might indicate Vijaya Manikya’s personal devotion for Shiva and Durga.
