Kutch, (Gujarat in transition), Silver Kori, 3.98g, INO Akbar and 'Murid Ray Singh', probably struck in late 16th century, earlier published as an issue of Rao Raydhanji II of Kutch. Obv: Shahada in (rectangular) border. Rev: Full name of Akbar, followed by Nagari/Gujarati legend murid raysingh. KM unlisted/ Rajgor 128.1 type unlisted. Toned Extremely Fine, Very Rare.
Note: The above issue was said to be of Rao Raydhanji II, who apparently declared himself to be a 'Murid' (disciple) of a Sufi Saint, however, the fact that it is struck in the name of Akbar makes this implausible with nearly 190 years separating Raydhanji and Akbar. 'Rai Singh', who struck these coins was Raisingh Jhala, the king of Halwad (Dhrangadhra). During the 3rd year of his reign Raisingh was fatally injured in battle of Malia in 1566 was presumed dead and his infant son Chandrasingh succeded as the king. However Raisingh apparently survived the battle because about 20 years later, he is known to have an audience with Akbar at Fatehpur Sikri. Having secured Akbar's confidence, Raisingh returned Halvad between January and March 1585 and reclaimed the throne from his son Chandrasingh with the help of the govorner of Gujarat Abdur Rahim Khan. being his stay in Akbar's court he had long standing infuence in his subsequent reign. During the rebellion of Muzaffar III, the local rulers of Kathiwad formed alliances with the warring parties - Jam Satrasal (Sataji) of Nawanagar allied himself with Amin Khan Ghori the de facto ruler of Junagadh. They were partisans of Muzaffar III. Raisingh Jhala being at the side of Mughals, he accepted the sovereignty of Akbar. the word "Murid" literally means "a servant", the subservience of Raisingh Jhala is underscored/inscribed on these coins.
