Lot No.3
AUC16
Ancient India
Silver
Punch Marked Coins, Post-Mauryas, Mathura region, 2nd century BC, 4 + 2 Symbols type, Silver, Karshapana, 3.31g, Obv: consist of a Sun, six-armed symbol, a monk standing on the back of a Bull, representing Lord Shiva on his Nandi vehicle, an ornate standard symbol, and a human figure standing to right with left hand raised in air and holding a plough and a staff (Danda) in the right hand, depicting Lord Balaram, the elder brother of Lord Krishna. The 4th symbol shows the same figure of Lord Shiva standing to left but without Nandi Bull. Depiction of Hindu God Balaram and Krishna was a total novelty in the Punch-marked coins as the belt of Mathura in 2nd century BC was profusely influenced by the worship of Lord Krishna and Balaram, and discovery of hundreds of stone sculptures of these two Heroes of Mahabharata is a proof of this influence. As a natural consequence, the local Punch-marked coins are also influenced by the depiction of Balaram, Rev: Traces of symbols. About Very Fine, Rare.
