Bengal Sultanate, Silver Tanka, 10.77g, Jalal al-Din Kurban / Guzban? (AH 719-, 1319 AD), (Lakhnauti) Mint, AH 719, al imam type, Obv: al-sultan al azam jalal al-dunya wal din abul muzaffar kurban (guzban) shah al-sultan, Rev: al imam legend, caliph mustasim. G&G B103. Very Fine+, Extremely Rare.
Two coins of this ruler were first published by John S. Deyell in 1978 (Numismatics Digest, December 1978) where he suggested the name variously as Jalal-al-din Kurban or Guzban Shah. Mr Rezaul Karim in his article suggested to read the name as Kirman or Kareen Shah whereas Syed EjaZ Hussain read as Jalal-al-din Kuret Shah. The coins follow the usual pattern of contemporary coins of Bengal, still citing the caliph al-musta‘?im. The only mint noted so far is khittah Lakhnaut? and dated AH 719, during the period of turmoil in the political situation at the end of Shams-al-din Firuz Shah’s reign (AH 700 to 720). He calls himself as ‘al-sultan al-Azam’ (the greatest sultan) but did not claim as ‘ibn sultan’ (son of a Sultan) which means he was actually a usurper and not a legal heir. As per chronological sequence of Lakhnauti mint based on numismatic evidences, Kurban/Guzban Shah appeared immediately after Bughda Shah, s/o Firuz Shah, whose coins are evident from Lakhnauti and Sunargaon mint during AH 717-718. Presumably Kurban/Guzban Shah was a high official during Firuz Shah’s reign who declared himself as Sultan and issued coin from somewhere in the vicinity of Lakhnauti. Most likely he ousted Bughda Shah and attempted to capture the throne but was immediately suppressed and wiped out by Firuz Shah.
