Gupta Empire, MahaKosala, Mahendraditya (c. 5th century AD), Repousse Gold Unit, 1.30 g. 19.69x19.96 mm, Obv: Brahmi legend Sri Mahendraditya; above, Garuda facing with short beak, flanked by Vaishnavite symbols chakra and shankh shell; crescent to left; below, rosette and Brahmi letter Ta, Rev: Blank. This gold coin was issued in central India as a feudatory issue of Gupta emperor Kumaragupta I, whose royal name was Mahendraditya. The sun symbol to the right of Garuda is absent here – only three such coins are recorded. In addition, this is the only specimen we've seen where Garuda has a short beak – this variety is unpublished. Garuda is usually only seen with a long beak that reaches his forehead. The coin has two small holes, indicating that it was probably worn later as a commemorative medal. Unpublished variety. Extremely Rare. |
