Hyderabad, Copper Paisa, 10.85g, Province of Berar (Elichpur) - anonymous 'tiger'facing left-type paisa of mid-19th century, attributed to private mints proliferated under the Nizam's rule, with initials 'SP' on the reverse. It is uncertain what the letters 'SP' mean and all sort of explanations circulate. Most likely it has some connection with Palmer & Co., a banking firm at Hyderabad, which controlled the province of Berar in lieu of advances made to the Govt. of the Nizam. Very Fine, Rare. |
