Pre Kadamba, Issue of Banavasi, Potin, 7.96g, 24.55x24.29mm, Obv: Standing bull to right, Brahmi legend around reading clockwise from 3'o Clock position as “Dhama Maharajasa Vinhuruda Budana(m)da Satakanisa”, Rev: A central tree motif surrounded by ancillary symbols-bow and arrow, flower and circles. Very few clear coin specimens such as this are known of the Post Satavahana-pre Kadamba period of Deccan India. It is also interesting to note that this coin highlights three religious streams within the ruler’s name - Vinhu(Vishnu), Ruda(Rudra) and Buddha. A ‘Satakarani’ name ending suggests a connection with the late Satavahana lineage. Very Fine, Extremely Rare. |
