Varuna Maharathis, Telangana, (100 AD), Copper Unit, 1.8g, Obv: Elephant to left, Typical circle and hook symbols on its back, River below, A nandipada in right field, probably from an undertype, Rev: Brahmi legend ‘savaruna’ seen from 6'O clock position. Very Fine, Rare. Coin finds of the Varuna Maharathis is a relatively new occurrence. These Maharathis were mostly contemporaries of the Satavahanas and were ruling parts of North Telangana and South Vidharba. Two rulers are known in this lineage so far, Pusavaruna and Chulavaruna. |
