Madras Presidency, Silver ¼ Rupee, 3.00gm, (1807 AD issue), Arcot Mint, AH 1172 / 6 RY, Edge: Grained milling to right (oblique milling), in the name of Alamgir II, open lotus type. F.Prid 249. About extremely Fine, Extremely Rare. According F. Pridmore, this type of coinage was announced by a proclamation dated 15th July 1807. the rangr of these series of coinage was Double Rupee, Rupee, Half Rupee, Quarter rupee & One eighth Rupee, but Quarter and one eighth Rupee failed to get general circulation as the diameter of one eighth Rupee was the same of Quarter Rupee just the weight was half, so these were stopped to be minted further and only 18216 pcs were minted, hence the rarity. |
