Guptas, Samudragupta (c. 335-375 CE), Gold Dinar, 7.23g, 28mm, Javelin Type, Obv: King standing left wearing a much stylised Kushan tunic as seen on his early series of coins of this type, sacrificing at altar and offering oblation with right hand and holding the royal sceptre (rajadanda)/Javelin with left hand.Garuda standard at left, Brahmi legend under arm: Samudra, circular Brahmi legend around- 'Samara Sata Vitata Vijaya jagata jitari purojitodivam jayati', Rev: Goddess Lakshmi nimbate seated on a throne, holding diadem and cornucopia with tamgha to left and Brahmi legend 'Devakrama' in the right field. R G Gokhle- Samudra gupta p60. Rig veda, 3rd chapter, p 38, Mazumder and Altekar, op: Cit p 269, notes 2 and 3. About Very Fine, Extremely Rare. This coin is undoubtedly one of the first of Gupta coin series if Samudragupta is to be considered to isuue in the earliest series . A comparison with later kushan coins and other coins of the same variety , such as those in BM collection (which can be seen in the Shaka gallery), show a dissimilarity with the reverse title ; it is quite clear that the Samudragupta coin DOES NOT read out Parakrama on the reverse as his title AS ON THE NORMAL STANDARD TYPES, as he was mentioned in Samudragupta's Allahabad pillar inscription . Instead it reads DEVAKRAMA in clear gupta period brahmi. The Gupta Idea of kingship through the adoption of the title –“Devakamapriya” from Ashoka the Great ( Rummindei pillar inscription) was also adopted by Samudragupta as mentioned in line 6 of Bairat stone inscription that mentions Samudragupta as Devakramapriya ( beloved by Gods). This is indeed a remarkable and a unique specimen so far capturing the title adopted the the Great Mauryan Emperor Ashoka. R G Gokhle- Samudra gupta p60. Rig veda, 3rd chapter, p 38, Mazumder and Altekar, op: Cit p 269, notes 2 and 3. |
