Guptas, Chandragupta II, Gold Dinar, 7.69g, ‘Lion-Slayer’ type, double struck on obverse, 30.64mm (broad flan), Obv: King slaying a lion to right with a bow and arrow, the lion falling back with an arrow in its mouth, Brahmi legend Narendrachandrah prathitarano (rane jyatyajayyo bhuvi simhavikramah) in top right field. Rev: Goddess facing front nimbate, seated on a lion facing left, holding a lotus, Brahmi legend Simha Vikramah in the right field (Altekar, Bayana, XVI 10). First time known to have a gupta coin with double striking error making the coin broader.Very Fine+, Extremely Rare. |
